My residence permit was terminated early — how long do I have to leave?
It depends on the ground. Only three grounds give 30 days without a fine, not every termination (Article 47(5)(c) of the Law on Aliens). For the others there is no grace period in the law. You do not get a visa-free year in place of the permit either (see the FAQ "My residence permit has expired — does the visa-free year start again?").
Which grounds give 30 days
The period of stay on a residence permit is terminated under Article 21(1). If you leave within 30 calendar days after the Agency's decision, no fine is imposed on these grounds:
- (b) — sufficient grounds to assume you pose a threat to state security, public safety or legal order;
- (c) — student status suspended for 90 days, or you stopped or completed your studies, where the permit or D6 visa was issued on that basis;
- (d) — you ended the activity or relationship on which the permit was based (for example, you left your job and it was a work permit; you separated and it was a family reunification permit).
The range (b)–(d) also includes two grounds for study permits added from 1 September 2026: failing to earn enough credits at university (c¹) and activity incompatible with study or the conditions of the study permit (c²).
An employer must notify the Agency of the termination of employment with a permit holder within 5 days (Article 20¹(5)).
Which grounds do not give 30 days
Any other ground in Article 21(1), in particular: forged documents or incorrect data in the application ((a), (i)); an expulsion decision ((h)); a criminal offence ((l)); breach of the conditions of the right to work or working without it ((m), (n)); a sham marriage ((g)); not applying for the residence card within 6 months ((k)). There is no Article 47(5) relief there: the time to leave is set by the decision under which you are expelled.
Also important
- The Agency decides on termination (Article 21(5)). It can be appealed only to a court, within 10 calendar days of service (Article 21²(1)). An appeal does not impede the review of expulsion or the enforcement of an expulsion decision (Article 21(5¹)).
- The 30 days run from the decision, not from the day you learned of it. Ask for the decision to be served against signature and record the date.
- If you leave within the 30 days, you later enter as an ordinary foreigner: visa-free if your country is on the list, and if there is no ban or unpaid fine (FAQ "Can I be refused entry on a visa run after an overstay?").
- If you miss the 30 days, the overstay is counted under the general rules (Article 191 of the Administrative Offences Code, FAQ "How much is the overstay fine in Georgia, and how is it enforced?").
⚠ The letters of the grounds have been checked against the Georgian original (version including the amendments in force from 1 September 2026). In the translations on matsne.gov.ge the lettering may differ. Ask a lawyer on which exact ground your permit was terminated.
